Club To Catwalk At The V&A

(Corbin, Anita, 1985, The Cloth, Summer Summit)

The exhibition at the V&A Museum looks at how "clubbers" style in the 1980s transferred to the world of fashion. "In 1984 London Fashion Week started up. For the first time designer creations were being shown under the same roof, it put British fashion on the map in a much more professional way, and there was increased government support. But parallel to that was the appearance of a really exciting underground club culture, whereby musicians would organises club nights and the creativity with fashion on display was incredibly influential

Fashion&Textiles - Styling&Photography

(Lynne Charlot, Juli, www.google.com)

In conclusion to our three day workshop we produced a final garment that was based on the fashion drawing ideas we had previously come up with. My final piece was focused on the body, my initial idea was to create a whole dress, but because my process was time consuming i ended up creating a skirt. The final piece was a conclusion of all our developed ideas we had been working on throughout the week.
(Lynne Charlot, Juli, www.google.com)

My idea was based on the simple inspiration of a "pencil shaving" i used brown parcel paper with a rim of red paper around the edges and folded paper to create the "pencil shaving" effect. Although the process was time consuming, i am extremely happy with the results i achieved, the narrow flattering waist band accentuates the grooves and detail of the dress and is naturally flattering to be worn, and the flared hem is similar to a skirt worn in the 50's - Poodle skirt designed by Juli Lynne Charlot...

After the design was complete we had to photograph our piece and create compositions that would emphasise the garment, because my garment is circular and made of paper i decided to organise my compositions around circular structures and paper [Library - books] The images i have taken work really well with the dress, i ensured natural lighting was available and nothing unnecessary entered the frame which would overcrowd the image, i feel that the dress has been advertised well in my photographs...

Fashion&Textiles - Developing Ideas

Day two of the Fashion&Textiles Transition we created miniature garments in relief using models and figures from magazines. We started by developing some of the designs we created prior to this, we were instructed to focus on one aspect of the body and create different designs around this area, i focused on the main body creating dresses. We focussed on the use of illustration to enhance our textures creating aesthetically pleasing visual responses. The purple designs shown bellow took inspiration from the triangles created when i folded paper, i cut out loads of little triangles to create a textured dress and slightly bigger ones to create a lengthy coat, on both images i then added in drawings with a similar colour scheme that fitted nicely with the garment. I also experimented with using plastic bags to create textures for garments, i was pleased with the results from this experiment.

Design Ideas Using Illustration&colourful papers, Author's Own

Once we had completed experimenting with different textures and papers we had to prepare for the next day by illustrating some ideas we had for a final piece. We had to design a minimum of 20 different ideas and below i have displayed several of these ideas, they range from skirts to dresses, capes to trousers, I even had a go at designing a bra and a cape. I was really surprised by the variety of different designs that i managed to achieve, of course they were all based around the concept of a pencil shaving, some designs proved difficult to combine with this but id' say overall the ideas worked well...
Fashion Illustrations, Author's Own
Bellow are a few examples of me thinking outside the box when creating my fashion illustration designs... Instead of sticking to the brief set i decided to experiment with my idea of pencil shavings, i realised that my initial illustrations were too conspicuous and it was apparent that i had tried to create a concrete garment. To improve my design ideas i decided to use the material intended to replicate and translate my concept, i gathered authentic pencil shavings from an old sharpener and found a pretty interesting collection of shavings. I used these shavings to then design organic and structural body garments, i use the term "structural body garments" because i wanted to explore abstract possibilities with my designs rather than designing something with a preconceived idea of what i wanted to achieve. The two designs that reflect this intention are the outer two, the first one shows a figure modelling strategically placed circular pieces of pencil shaving. I am fond of this because i didnt follow the shape or outline of the figure which gives it a much more interesting effect rather than creating something figure hugging. The second design is my favourite, i feel that i was really experimental with this particular design, it shows black pencil shaving with a red rim, the dramatic contrast between the two colours really accentuates my idea but it does not over power the unique and abstract nature of the garment.

Fashion&Textiles - Paper Manipulation, Structure Texture Text

The Fashion&Textiles transition week was definitely my favourite so far, it taught us the true design process and we used practical skills to demonstrate our knowledge of this. To start with we had a choice of making one of three things: an architectural structure, a texture or text. I decided upon creating textures, to do this i experimented with different ways that i could manipulate paper, i folded it, glued it, unfolded it and curled it etc... Although it was not the task set, i decided to make miniature dress-like sculptures out of the textures i had created.
Mini Texture Ideas, Author's Own
Here are some examples of the dress-like sculptures i created. The first one displayed shows brown and green paper folded loads of times and bent into a circle shape, i was very pleased with what i achieved and saw the potential in this design. The second design shows a strip of turquoise paper folded into zig zags and then unfolded again, i barely manipulated the shape of the final product, it just sort of found thing shape when i let go of it. The last design which is all in white is also another one of my favourites, it shows a variety of different sized circles all joined together. I felt that this design could also go quite far, i felt that it already took the shape of a woman's figure and could be transformed into a garment.
The next stage in our designing process was to make 20 of the small structures, textures or text that we had just designed. At first i thought this was just a pointless task that was just going to fill up the day, but i found out that it is a truly fascinating design process and i'm glad i saw it through. Each person in the class created 20 varied sizes of their original design and presented it on the floor in front of a mannequin, we were then paired up with someone random and asked to design 6 different garments using 14 different textures, structures or patterns. I found this task really fun and i felt that me and my partner achieved some really interesting results. The 6 briefs for designing were: Simplistic, Bold, Sculptural, Controversial and Tall...

LensBasedMedia - Refining stories

On the last day of the Lens Based Media Transition we had prepared short story boards using 6 frames and photographs. My story board was based around Toystory's idea of toys coming to life, although this didn't follow the discussed template i enjoyed making it and i thought it was quite a good story.
Initial Story Board, Author's Own
Later on we had to refine our stories or change them completely if they didn't fit the "perfect story" template, as mine didn't fit this i felt it would be practical to change my story all together so that i had a beginning 4 obstacles and an ending. My story shows two characters, Snowballl and Mimi landing on the moon ready to carry out a mission, Mimi falls hungry and goes on a search for food in their rocket, to her dismay she finds that Snowball has eaten all the food. Snowball and Mimi argue and go there separate ways, then Mimi discovers their oxygen is running low, but she cant find Snowball anywhere. Finally she is reunited with Snowball and they go home hungry but happy.
I think the obstacles i presented the two characters with were fairly dramatic and if this sequence was produced into a longer film it could end up quite gripping and entertaining. Im sure if i had more time and more frames to create this story in, i could have made it a lot more interesting.

LensBasedMedia - Stories

Photo of Group Work, Author's Own

During the second lesson of the Graphics transition we worked a lot on the art of storytelling and story boards. We began by watching some short films and noting down what made them interesting and engrossing. One of the films we watched was a short 20 minute film called Fridge by Peter Mullan, it was really emotional and grabbed everyone in the rooms attention. The film is set in the slums of Scotland and shot in one small courtyard overlooked by surrounding estates. Two main characters Rudy and Alice are homeless and they are drunks who live on the streets of a Scottish town, in a rundown and depressed area. Rudy interrupts some thugs threatening another drunk and sends them off but, for the laugh, the oldest boy locks another in an abandoned fridge. Unable to get the door open to let him out, Rudy and Alice try to get help and keep the trapped boy alive until someone can help him out. The film works best as an allegory for poverty and the boy in the fridge is not the only person trapped and needing help. At times it makes this point a little heavily but mostly it is clever and spot on. Rudy and Alice are trying to help the boy but everyone they turn to turns a blind eye and it is up to the poor to help themselves. The sense of feeling behind this message is powerful and it left a real impression on me as a result.

After watching a few more short films we analysed the basic layout of movies in six steps and came to a conclusion that it began with the introduction of characters, proceeded with at least 4 problems / obstacles, and ended with either a resolution or a

cliffhanger. To start the process of creating our own films we got into groups of 4 and started to draw characters and locations from memory of our imagination or those of real life. We then started to work with each other to create a story using the basic layout and a combination of all our characters and locations. We all had to decide on three of the best ideas and then using the same sheet of paper translate our idea. This proved fairly difficult because the images behind would confuse the story but we completed the task, and we used bold colours so the story didn't get lost in with the background. The image below is what we came up with.

Throughout the day each of us were given a short tutorial on how to use the program "i-stop motion." The software allows you to take loads of pictures and then edit them together at the end to create a moving image. Our class moulded a piece of blue tack in different ways, and the video below shows the blue-tacks progression.

LensBasedMedia - Art Of Cropping

Beginning the Lens Based Media Transition we were asked to photograph six things that reflected our environment e.g. Home, room, journeys etc... I chose to photograph a variety of different things :
Images 1 − 3 show part of my journey to UNI
Image1- Sunny street full of trees that i walk down
Image2- View from the bus stop i sit at
Image3- An interestingly decorated lampost
Image4- Layers of my bathroom wall as it is being decorated
Image5- A piece of graffiti near my house that interests me
Image6-My bedroom wall
6 Photograph of My Environment, Author's Own
Once we had all six images we were asked to draw on an A1 sheet of paper the image of our choice, i chose to draw my image in a mixture of charcoal and pencil because i could draw detailed in pencil [Bricks] and fill in shadowy areas quickly. Once we had finished this task we where then asked to crop our images in several different ways but to be creative with how we choose to crop them. I decided it would be interesting to stray away from the popular way of cropping an image into a perfect rectangle or square, so i experimented with triangles and various other odd shapes. At the start of the task i was not convinced that i would achieve anything particularly interesting, but the majority of the results i achieved were really dramatic and fascinating... I also think the way i have grouped together all my cropped images into one collage exaggerates the captivating nature of the work.

A quick task we completed at the end of the first day was to walk around the school for half an hour and compose photos that could reflect the words Happy, Sad, Echo, Fall, Jump, Crush. The aim of the task was to not be to literal when composing our photographs. The task proved difficult because there were not enough interesting and diverse things to take pictures of. Looking around the school i found empty cupboards with minimal items in, a washing machine, vending machine etc...

GraphicDesign - Present, Your Future Self

On the final day of the graphics transition we had to reflect past experiences and include how we see our future selves in 2033. To begin with I started to brainstorm ideas that I associate with my past, present and future, I considered phrases / quotes that relate to men in some way, things that I find satisfying, and ideas based around art that has inspired me. I gained some visual ideas from some books displaying different posters and different typography’s. For the first hour before creating my posters I found it helpful to do some research using these two books, I gained ideas on how to place type and how to convey a message using subliminal messages and visual elements.
 Images of Posters, Author's Own

This first poster i created has a relief effect to it, i created this effect by raising the letters slightly using blue tac... I cut out white letters and stuck them to a white background so that the quote "less is more" was reflected through the work. The reason i decided to use this quote and display it the way i have is because i feel that it relates to the way i like things to be... I feel that this quote is the notion that simplicity and clarity are the root the good design and ideas. It demonstrates that simplicity has a greater impact on whatever you do by limiting the presentation to the bare essentials needed to convey a message or an idea... The idea behind the image bellow "simplistic" is similar to the one above. Both images are on plain white paper with a slight adjustment to the paper which creates a shadow, shadows are straightforward things and are simple enough to create with the right lighting. What i like about shadows is that they can be manipulated to resemble something completely different to its model.

This poster represents something that me and my dad have said to each other since i was small, i would say "I love you infinity"  and he would say "+1"... The idea behind the design i have used in conjunction with the quote is based on the fact that parallel lines never meet, they can go on forever and never touch. I have designed the poster so that not all of the lines are parallel, this doesn't have a meaning behind it, i just decided that continuos straight lines would be boring.

This poster relates to an artist that inspired me in 2011, it was when i researched the photographer Steve McCurry for a project. McCurry's images were among the first to show the conflict in Afghanistan , he continued to cover armed conflicts including the Lebanon Civill War and the Cambodian Civil War. His work focusses on the human consequences of war, not only showing what war impresses on the landscape, but rather, on the human face "I try to convey what it is to be like that person"
Although McCurry's work is of a melancholy nature, the images he produces are beautiful and thats where my quote "In a time of destruction be creative" comes from. I used brown parcel paper and scrunched it up to represent the time of destruction, i feel that the dull and muted tones show this well.

This next poster shows a linear drawing of an Elephant in a room, the image is still simple but the use of overlay makes it appear quite crowded. I used pink bubble writing because of elephants connotations with the colour pink and bubbles. The overlapping of the image and the text represents the idea that the elephant is impossible to overlook, and the opacity of it is that there will always be people who pretend that the elephant is not there having chosen to avoid dealing with the issue. This quote can be associated with some issues i have had to cross in my life, whereby i cannot stand it when people choose to ignore important issues.

GraphicDesign - Words, What Do You Say?

 Inventing Typography, Author's Own

In lesson two of Graphics we started to look into the method of Typography  is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, font size, line length, line spacing and adjusting the spaces between words. Typography is performed by typesetters compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, comic book artists, graffiti artists, clerical workers, and anyone else who arranges type for a product. Until the Digital age, typography was a specialised occupation. Digitisation opened up typography to new generations of visual designers and lay users.

To begin the process we were asked to quickly jot down how we could "make an impression on the paper"  Some of the impressions i came up with were: tearing, staining, cutting, puncturing, burning, scrunching etc...
When everyone had completed this task we were asked to look at each others ideas, it was not the ideas we were looking at but the way in which they were recorded. It became apparent to us all when observing others work that everyone had recorded they're ideas in completely different ways. Some were neat and in black biro, some were bold and multi coloured and some were messy with no order - this was typography - the ways in which people artistically decided to arrange their letters on the page.

After the short exercise we were given an A1 sheet of paper to create different type faces, using letters from the alphabet. We could go up to any letter we decided as long as we felt we had enough variety of design to work with. Following on from this we then had to choose the design we thought we could take further and create a whole alphabet and numbers 0-9 using this font. It was a hard decision because we had to think about which font would be most effective but at the same time it had to be something we could complete in an hour.
I chose the design used to create letter E, letter E in my alphabet consists of only the negative spaces of the letter being apparent, the opposite to which most typefaces are. I found the task enjoyable, it was fun creating our own font, but some letters proved difficult to create.

Towards the end of the day we were asked to create something (poster / something 3D) with a quote that we could relate back to ourselves. We still had to consider the element of typography when designing and if our design related to the quote correctly. I chose the quote

"All the best things in life come in small packages"

 Quote Made 3D, Author's Own

I feel that this quote relates best to me because i have always been the smallest throughout my year groups and when ever i have complained about being short the answer i have always got - whether it be from my parents, my friends or my teachers - is that all the best things in life come in small packages. So, to create my meaningful quote i created a small package looking box using brown parcel paper to enhance the idea of a real package. I decided to display the text on a white piece of paper on the top on the brown box as if it was an address label. I cut many lengths of paper and coloured each one in using coloured chalk, i then curled each one around a pencil to create the twisted spiral effect and stuck them to the inside of the box... Instead of creating "All the best things in life" i decided to create my idea metaphorically rather than precisely and suggest excitement and energy by using the springy colourful strips - almost firework-like.

GraphicDesign - Faces, Yourself&Others

 4 Sketches, Author's

Graphic Design.
On the first day day of experimenting with Graphic design in the foundation course we were given a series of tasks to complete:
Task1, was to complete a portrait of someone sitting opposite us with our eyes closed
Task2, was to complete a portrait of a different person using our weaker hand
Task3, was to draw the person opposite us with the pen in our mouths
Task4, the final task was to draw ourselves without looking in a mirror using one line only.

The tasks produced some really interesting outcomes, they also helped us to increase confidence when drawing… I think the funniest drawing was the one we had to complete with our eyes closed, it ended up terrible with features all over the place… The one i like the most is the portrait

Following the portrait drawings we created images of a partners ear, we could use any medium we preferred. The idea behind this task was for us to understand that just because something familiar to us seems "easy" to remember and draw does not mean it always is. The task proved to be more challenging than most of us expected, with the unique and organic shapes the ear creates come obscure shadows.
                                                                                                        -
After the sketching exercises we were asked to create a collage using pictures of celebrities, the main to faces i chose were Leonardo Di Caprio and Noel Clarke. I ripped the two pictures down the middle so that it would create a more interesting look rather than just cutting it perfectly down the middle. Luckily the two images corresponded accordingly creating what looked like one image as a whole... For a more dynamic approach to the collage i decided to add in a suited body, some hands and a contrasting pair of eyes, i was really happy with results achieved. After the collage process was complete we were asked to create a 3cmX3cm view finder and depict sections of our collage, to pinpoint interesting areas to recreate. I photographed the two sections i chose and then manipulated them in photoshop to enhance the abstract nature of the final product. I am really happy with the results i produced.

Time Line of Week 1

 Image of sketchbook, Author's own

To the left are the ideas I came up with for my timeline jotted down in my sketch book. It shows 5 different size 3D cubes suspended from string that represent each day:
Day1- Personal objects representing memories
Day2- Drawing the personal objects
Day3- Creating a time capsule using personal objects
Day4- V&A memory palace exhibition
To the right is my initial idea of creating the box using card, I wasn't happy with the outcome so I proceeded to use a different medium to work with.

Here i have experimented with displaying my time line using a computer generated program that creates 3D cubes, i have incorporated images representing each day of the first week. I did initially attempt creating the boxes using card, but to my standards they looked too messy and together as one piece they didn't work.

Memory Palace Exhibition At The V&A

V&A Museum 9/11/13

The memory palace is an exhibition being held at the V&A museum it has been put together by sky arts imagination,  the exhibition brings together a new work of fiction by the author Hari Kunzru with 20 specially commissioned installations by graphic designers, illustrators and typographers to create a walk in book. The story is set in future London, hundreds of years after the worlds information infrastructure was wiped out by an immense magnetic storm, Technology and knowledge have been lost and nature has taken over the ruins of the old city. The narrator of the story is in prison and he has been accused of being a member of a banned sect. The narrator uses uses his prison cell as his 'memory palace' the location for all the rings he has remembered: corrupted fragments and misunderstood details of the things we may recognise from our time. The result is exhilarating. As well as crossing artistic boundaries by combining literature with art, the curators have transformed what it means to “read” a book and “see” an exhibition. You walk through the story, which is non-linear but somehow makes sense. Hands down one of the best exhibitions i have visited so far, i really enjoyed it.

Kessels, Eric (2013)
Dutch advertising doyen, Erik Kessels has piled up a great stack of newspapers and flyers into a temple-like structure in one corner, you can walk inside and in-between and it represents "In the time before the Withering, there was a religious practice called Recycling," reads the text. "It was a ceremony to celebrate the cycle of life and the turning of the seasons … Men and women would chant: I am not a plastic bag." Erik Kessels responded to two memory fragments that recall advertising and recycling, creating a giant palace made from recycled advertising leaflets. The multiple layers of the structure, made up of thousands of partially legible messages act as both a comment on the overarching story and our present reality where we are overwhelmed by colours, shapes, and images.
'At the height of the Booming, sign was so plentiful that it fell from the sky like rain. It rustled underfoot in autumn and rose and fluttered about the palaces and hospitals like apple blossom in spring. This was called advertising'.
Interpretation of The Wilding Author's Own(Posavec, Stefanie 2012)

The Booming  - The golden age before the Withering

Magnetisation - The magnetic storm that brought about the time of the withering

The Withering - The present time of decline

The Wilding - A time in the future when humans live in complete union with nature

-

Here i have presented a sketch of the Wilding from my trip to the V&A and an interpretation of the wilding using the idea from my time capsule. I really liked the three steps that the artist used to present his story: plush areas slowly decreasing until completely gone, followed by an elegant majestic regrowth. The image i created shows the loose floorboard that i buried my time capsule in and the memories growing out and upwards from underneath.

Israeli typographer Oded Ezer has made eight short films that interpret some other playful definitions in the story. Screens show him eating and setting fire to individual letters, and mistranslating words using Google Translate – a technique Kunzru himself has used in previous work.

Bombing
A bomb or boom was energy in a small space. In the beginning there was a seed or a paradigm, which exploded, growing the towers and the hospitals and the bridges and pradas and ponzis. They used bombs to feed the great bubbles that surrounded the cities, protecting them from the dangers outside the box. The bubbles are said to have shimmered with such opulence that weak or downsize men were driven mad.

 Enterprize
The good things of the earth were distributed to all. There was such an abundance that even the lowliest was showered in riches. Enterprize was the wealth that came to the people of the Boomtime, just by virtue of entering or being born. From this wealth, the cleverest and most talented extracted content or happiness. The evil ones who brought about the Withering dissipated their enterprize in synergy, or wasteful lust.

Time Capsule.

Pictures of time capsule burial
Our first assignment was to collect 10 items that could represent our memories from first 18 years of our lives, the objects had to be from our past and some current. We were given instructions to draw these 10 memories in different medias, and then to create a time capsule using the items. A time capsule is a container storing a selection of objects chosen as being typical of a present time, buried for discovery in the future. The idea of the assignment was that the  time capsule will be buried and dug back up in 2023. I placed my memories into a clear plastic bag and placed them under a broken floorboard in my house, I decided on this location because I felt that it was a memory in its self and this is where my memories have grown from.

10 MEMORIES

Hat With Plaits: Its not a memory of my own, but its definitely something that defines a part of my childhood... From when I was able to start forming my own opinions as a baby and develop a personality I decided it wasn't fair to be a little girl with no hair, my mum noticed this as I was always intrigued by my older sisters long blonde hair... Soon after my mum noticed my longing for hair she bought me this pink hat with two brown plaits hanging down with little pink bows on... The hat became almost an additional limb for me, some kids have dummy's, blanket's, toys etc... And I had my little hat with plaits.

Passport: I was  so excited about getting my first passport photo taken... I was always to young to appreciate previous family holidays, but by the age of 4 I couldn't wait to get on an airplane... Me and my mum walked down to Woolworth on our local high street and went to the back of the store where the booth was... I remember standing for ages in the little white booth spinning the chair up and up and up so that I could fit into the picture... You tell by my face in the picture that I am over excited, you can also see a section of my mums hand holding me still so I wouldn't fall off the chair...

Certificate: I remember in primary school it was always such an achievement to receive a certificate... In our classroom we would have a smiley face sticker chart, and whenever you earned a certain amount of stickers you would receive a certificate... After collecting Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates you was chosen to take an hour out of lessons to eat cake with the head teacher and all the other children... This certificate was the first of many and I "never gave up until I succeeded"

Envelope Of Nice Notes: Year 3, every one in my class were given 30 slips of paper and an envelope which had to be decorated in such a way that would determine who's was who... We all had to write down one nice thing about everyone in the class and then at the end we collected our envelope and could read all the nice things said...

"I like you because you play with me"
"to Riley you are good at sitting"
"She makes me laugh"
"You are the best"

Poly Pockets: I always used to like tiny little toys as a kid, and these two were part of a set I had called poly pockets... For my 6th birthday I received two of the same poly pocket magnetic beach party sets, so I had to take one back to the shop (but I kept both of the little girls) I would play with the blue poly pocket, but with the magnetic bottom I attached the toy to one of the hands of the clock in my kitchen, and it remained there for about 5 more years...

Monsoon Postcard: When I was about 8 I was cast for a modeling job with Monsoon kids wear, I excitedly accepted the job... The day came for me to attend the shoot and I was incredibly ill, I was really upset throughout the day because I wasn't feeling up to it at all... I always hated this picture because I look obviously ill (and weird) but I was happy I was able to be part of something for a fairly big company...

Year7 Planner: I became best friends with a girl called Mimi through being overly obsessed with decorating our year 7 planners with loads of brightly coloured stickers and patterned selotape... We would sit in our science lesson not listening, swapping different stickers with each other...

First Present From First Boyfriend: My first present from my first boyfriend, a pair of dangly silver earrings with 3 gems in each one... Sadly I haven't always been the girliest of girls so I rarely wore them, but it was the thought that's counts, and I was very pleased with them...

Berlin Photobooth With Boyfriend: This strip of photos represents the best summer holiday with some of the best people ever ! Summer of 2013 was almost like a big party with all my friends before every one went their separate ways to UNI...

Glastonbury 09-13: First time at Glastonbury in 2009 I ended up on the BIGGEST stage of the BIGGEST festival in the world with all my friends ! I was a bit nervous at first but strangely looking out from the stage at THOUSANDS of people gave me the biggest rush of adrenaline... The second time I attended Glastonbury was in 2013, and I ended up on stage again with the DJ set Major Lazer, another fantastic moment with one of my close friends... A memory I will never ever forget...
