Fashion&Textiles - Paper Manipulation, Structure Texture Text

The Fashion&Textiles transition week was definitely my favourite so far, it taught us the true design process and we used practical skills to demonstrate our knowledge of this. To start with we had a choice of making one of three things: an architectural structure, a texture or text. I decided upon creating textures, to do this i experimented with different ways that i could manipulate paper, i folded it, glued it, unfolded it and curled it etc... Although it was not the task set, i decided to make miniature dress-like sculptures out of the textures i had created.

Here are some examples of the dress-like sculptures i created. The first one displayed shows brown and green paper folded loads of times and bent into a circle shape, i was very pleased with what i achieved and saw the potential in this design. The second design shows a strip of turquoise paper folded into zig zags and then unfolded again, i barely manipulated the shape of the final product, it just sort of found thing shape when i let go of it. The last design which is all in white is also another one of my favourites, it shows a variety of different sized circles all joined together. I felt that this design could also go quite far, i felt that it already took the shape of a woman's figure and could be transformed into a garment.
The next stage in our designing process was to make 20 of the small structures, textures or text that we had just designed. At first i thought this was just a pointless task that was just going to fill up the day, but i found out that it is a truly fascinating design process and i'm glad i saw it through. Each person in the class created 20 varied sizes of their original design and presented it on the floor in front of a mannequin, we were then paired up with someone random and asked to design 6 different garments using 14 different textures, structures or patterns. I found this task really fun and i felt that me and my partner achieved some really interesting results. The 6 briefs for designing were: Simplistic, Bold, Sculptural, Controversial and Tall...
